Bryn Coch Resource caters for children from the age of 7 to 11, that is from Year 3 to Year 6. Places within our resource classes are allocated by Flintshire Local Authority, usually after statutory assessment has taken place. Most of the children have been identified as having more complex learning needs and come to us from all over Flintshire and sometimes beyond. Complex learning needs generally means that they have had more difficulty accessing the National Curriculum than their peers within a mainstream setting. To provide for the pupil’s needs the resource is staffed by two specialist teachers, one nursery nurse and four classroom assistants.
One of the greatest advantages of the resource unit is the small group size. Pupils work in groups of similar ability but also have the opportunity to integrate with mainstream classes if it is appropriate. Resource staff work hard to ensure learning takes place in a happy, creative and stimulating environment. Multi-sensory teaching techniques are incorporated into lessons and pupil participation is encouraged sensitively. Self-esteem is always high on the list of priorities for all our pupils at Bryn Coch but it is especially so within the resource. Staff employ a variety of reward systems to nurture positive behaviour and constantly strive to work closely to support both the pupils and their families.
Parents/Carers often first hear about us at an Annual Review or Team Meeting as recommendations are made regarding appropriate levels of support. We would urge you to come and have a look around if this has been suggested, we think you will be pleasantly surprised.
